Court orders Facebook to identify revenge porn poster

From Sophos Naked Security:

Court orders Facebook to identify revenge porn poster

Facebook has been ordered to help a young woman find out who published an intimate video of her on the social network without her permission.

The judgement was made after a 21-year-old Dutch woman sued Facebook when a video of her performing a sex act on her ex-boyfriend was uploaded to the site in January.

Stop Abuse Online site launches to help tackle cyberbullying

From Sophos Naked Security:

Stop Abuse Online site launches to help tackle cyberbullying

The UK government has launched a new website that aims to help victims of online abuse.

Aimed primarily at women and LGBT (lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender people), which it says are the most abused groups on the internet, the site offers advice on finding help and reporting offences, as well as getting offensive content removed.

Stop Abuse Online, launched on Saturday, says the rapid rise in popularity of social networks, online gaming, chat rooms and online dating, facilitated by the prevalence of smartphones, has created an environment in which the amount of communication and information on the web has led to an increase in undesirable behaviour.

Supreme Court throws out conviction for Facebook threats

I find this rather disturbing.

From Fox News:

Supreme Court throws out conviction for Facebook threats

The Supreme Court on Monday threw out the conviction of a Pennsylvania man convicted of making threats on Facebook, but dodged the free speech issues that had made the case intriguing to First Amendment advocates.

Chief Justice John Roberts, writing for seven justices, said it was not enough for prosecutors to show that the comments of Anthony Elonis would make a reasonable person feel threatened.

But the court did not specify to lower courts exactly what the standard of proof should be.

Orange County Public Schools to monitor students on social media

Not sure about how I feel on this one.  From a professional point of view this is an invasion of privacy. Monitoring a childs social media use is a parents responsibility not a government entities.  The problem originates from parents not being more engaged in their childrens digital lives.  Whether it be cyberbullying, sexting, DDoS'ing your school (all of which I've blogged about in the past 72 hours) parents MUST take active roles in what their children are doing online.

Not sure how to get more involved in your childs digital life - Google it!!!

From ClickOrlando.com:

ORLANDO, Fla. -
The Orange County school district is now monitoring students' social media messages in an effort to curb cyberbullying, crime on campus and suicide.

Social media elevate school fights to new realm

From the Norwalk Reflector:

Social media elevate school fights to new realm

The student sitting at the front of the class doesn’t know she’s about to be attacked. But others in the room apparently do.

As another teenager approaches her from behind, several students in the class whip out their cellphones. They have no intention of dialing for help, however. Their aim is to record the encounter between the two teenage girls so that they can upload it to Instagram, YouTube and other sites.

How to kill a troll

Cyberbullying must be stopped.  The stats in this article are eye opening.  I'm not so sure ignoring a cyberbully will stop it but at least the stats bear out that it is a start.  From Sophos Naked Security:

How to kill a troll

Pew surveyed 2849 internet users. Here are some of the results:
  • One out of every four women between 18 years old and 24 years old reports having been stalked or sexually harassed online.
  • Two out of five people reported having been victims of some form of online harassment.
  • One out of four had seen someone being physically threatened.
Out of those people who've reportedly been the targets of online harassment, these are the rates at which they've suffered particular forms of abuse:
  • 27% of internet users have been called offensive names
  • 22% have had someone try to purposefully embarrass them
  • 8% have been physically threatened
  • 8% have been stalked
  • 7% have been harassed for a sustained period
  • 6% have been sexually harassed
